As the dry season of the northern ASEAN season has set in, occasional increases in hotspot activities and occurrence of smoke haze can be expected in parts of the Mekong sub-region during the coming fortnight. In the southern ASEAN region, hotspot activities are forecast to remain subdued.

In the southern ASEAN region, hotspot activities in the southern parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan may persist due to dry conditions. An increase in shower activities in the later half of the fortnight can help to subdue the hotpots.

In the southern ASEAN region, the expected drier weather could contribute to an increased risk of hotspot activities, in particular in southern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan, and may lead to occurrences of transboundary smoke haze in the region.

Hotspot activities in the northern ASEAN region are expected to remain subdued due to the prevailing wet weather conditions. In the southern ASEAN region, with dry conditions forecast to persist for the rest of the month, there is an increased risk of hotspot activities in the region, in particular in southern Sumatra, western and central Kalimantan. Further escalation of hotspot activities could lead to the occurrence of transboundary smoke haze.

The wet weather conditions expected in the northern ASEAN region during the first two weeks of July 2018 would help to subdue hotspot activities in the Mekong sub-region. However, with the dry weather conditions expected for most parts of the southern ASEAN region in the second week of July 2018, there is an increased risk of hotspot activities particularly in the fire-prone provinces of Sumatra and Kalimantan, which could lead to the occurrence of transboundary smoke haze.
